In Jungian’s psychic model there are 5 main archetypes: The Persona (public personality), the Shadow (the unconscious), The Anima/Animus (relational self), The Mana archetype (ideal/magical self), and the Self archetype, which is the archetype of wholeness. This painting is gross and gruesome, it is built through multiple layers of turpentine and oil painting to make it raw and visceral. There are anatomical elements within it; a liver and a kidney, and a figure locked in conflict battling both an external force and itself.
During the making I experienced cathartic moments where a lot of repressed material from my psyche came up to light to be witnessed, unifying concepts and messages that helped me understand different rooms of my own experience. Normally I do not plan on concepts, such as, ‘I am going to make a painting of my shadows and I will write ‘Self’ as one of Jung’s archetypes’, but I simply follow the impulses of my own libido which later make sense.
