MORE ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:
In gnostic traditions, Sophia, driven by an independent desire to know the unknowable, acted outside of the current causing a rupture in the divine order, leading her to a fall into the lower realms. Sophia merges masculine and feminine qualities and represents the integration of polarities through transmutation of feminine darkness. In the painting the shadow entities represent lost and suppressed aspects of femininity due to abuse and persecution, together with Seraphim angels; there is also a a representation of the The Maiden, The Mother and The Crown, a triad that represents the cyclical nature of life: The Maiden walks towards the deep sea (the subconscious) under a Balsamic Moon while The Mother and The Crown watch and protect her initiation and descent into the underworld. She enters the underworld not to be lost but to pick herself back — returning whole and anew.
