ABOUT THIS ARTWORK:
In gnostic traditions, Sophia, driven by an independent desire to know the unknowable, acted outside of the current causing a rupture in the divine order, leading her to a fall into the lower realms. Sophia merges masculine and feminine qualities and represents the integration of polarities through transmutation of feminine darkness. She represents the long forgotten view of intellect through lived experience rather than rational input, hence why it is reveered as a gnostic symbol. I did this painting without knowing her story, as I simply started using my tools on the canvas without knowing what was going to be created. At the time I was close to finish, the name 'Sophia' came to my mind and I learned about her teachings and fusion of masculine and feminine polarities that are clearly depicted as her cosmic 'DNA' in the middle of the painting. There are shadow entities that represent lost and suppressed aspects of femininity due to abuse and persecution, and also with Seraphim angels; In the right side there is a a representation of the The Maiden, The Mother and The Crown; a triad that represents the cyclical nature of life through an Initiation known to every woman: The Maiden walks towards the deep sea (the subconscious) under a Balsamic Moon while The Mother and The Crown watch and protect her initiation and descent into the underworld. The codes that fall from this image are messages of having fun exploring one's own gifts as a message from our feminine ancestors. She enters the underworld not to be lost, but to pick herself back returning whole and anew.
